The goto-function takes you to an individual waypoint or point of interest (sight seeing point). The GPS receiver always indicates the direction and the distance from the present viewpoint to that waypoint (aerial line). This is very useful for sight-seeing-tours in towns as long as you are moving by foot within a limited area, e.g. the city centre.
Furthermore you have the route-function which takes you alongside the waypoints which are part of a route. You can follow the route from the starting point to the end point or the other way round. The display is the same as with the goto-function but the GPS receiver switches when passing one waypoint automatically to the next until you reach the end of the route. You need no further operating of your receiver once you started the route driving or walking. This is comparable to car navigation. For example the GEKO 201 by Garmin can save up to 125 points per route.
No matter which GPS receiver for using those two functions coordinates have to be fixed for the waypoints and routes in advance. Therefore we have developped the software “GROUPI for GPS” with which you can get those coordinates on basis of scanned maps. We wanted to develop a software which mainly supports the two above-mentioned functions.
